Pentanque Club finds new home; City to build 16 courts behind Atlantic Rec Center

The Amelia Island Boules Club will relocate its petanque courts from the riverfront to a city baseball field located behind the Atlantic Rec Center.

The Fernandina Beach City Commission Tuesday voted 5-0 to build 16 regulation petanque courts on the Joe Velardi Field. The estimated cost is $50,000 and relocation work will be done by city staff.

The move was necessitated by the commission's approval of site plans to build a waterfront park at its July 16 meeting.

"I think the club would prefer Joe Velardi field for a number of reasons," Boules Club President John Abbott told commissioners before the vote. "This affords us to have brand new courts, on brand new terrain. It gives us an opportunity to perhaps in the future to expand these courts at that location. There are also some existing amenities that will also work well for us as well."

During discussion of the new location, Mayor Bradley Bean asked how losing the Joe Velardi Field would impact youth baseball and softball in the city.

Babe Ruth Little League Vice President Tom Camera said there were enough fields available for the 330 kids who play baseball in the league. He said the Boules Club deserved a permanent location to call home.

The Boules Club will also keep the petanque courts at Central Park.
