Jeremy Holmes has been named fire chief for Fernandina Beach following 26 years of service at the Covington, Georgia fire department.

Holmes has been fire chief in Covington since 2018.

"I have made an offer to a fire chief candidate, his name is Jeremy Holmes, and he has accepted the city's offer and will be joining our team on May 5," City Manager Sarah Campbell told city commissioners Tuesday night.

Holmes rose through the ranks of the Covington Fire Department from relief driver to engineer to lieutenant to training officer to Chief of Training. In 2018, he was named fire chief.

Holmes, 45, is the married father of five. He completed his undergraduate degree in Public Safety Leadership at Mercer University in 2016 and obtained his law degree at John Marshall Law School in Atlanta.

Holmes follows Fire Chief Harvey “Ty” Silcox, who announced his retirement from the Fernandina Beach Fire Department after nine years of service.
