The 55-year-old driver of a dump truck died at the scene Thursday after colliding with two cars that rolled his truck over on Amelia Island Parkway on the curve adjacent to the east side of the municipal airport.
The crash at 12:48 p.m. resulted in serious injuries to the respective drivers of the other vehicles - a 100-year-old woman and an 84-year-old man - who were airlifted to hospitals in Jacksonville, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The dump truck driver from Indiana was northbound when it collided with the southbound pickup truck of the 84-year-old. FHP had not determined what caused those vehicles to impact.
That collision caused the dump truck to then strike a Toyota driven by the 100-year-old woman, which sent the dump truck rolling over into a ditch where a new bicycle lane is being constructed on the west side of Amelia Island Parkway.
FHP reported the pick-up truck driver was listed in “critical” condition, while the woman was in “serious” condition.
Amelia Island Parkway from 14th Street south to Buccaneer Trail was closed for nearly six hours while police investigators worked the accident scene, sending motorists onto Fletcher Drive for island access.
