Ayscue files to be city mayor; Bean seeks re-election to the commission

Fernandina Beach City Commissioner Darron Ayscue has filed to run for Mayor in the August city elections. Current Mayor Bradley Bean has filed for re-election as city commissioner.

Ayscue, a county firefighter, was elected to the city commission in 2022.

According to the city charter, only sitting city commissioners not up for re-election can run for the position of mayor. That leaves Commissioner James Antun as the only possible opponent to Ayscue for the mayor's seat. Antun has not committed as a candidate for the two-year term of mayor.

"It has been a pleasure to serve the City of Fernandina Beach as a Commissioner and I am proud of the work this City Commission has been able to accomplish in the short 15 months since taking office. As Mayor, I would continue the strong leadership we have seen under our current Mayor and lead the City into the future while embracing our rich history," Ayscue said.

Mayor Bean's term expires in December. He was elected to the city commission in 2020 and then was elected mayor in 2022.

The city election is Aug. 20.
